The walking tour follows a circular route, so you can start at any historic building and return to your starting point. Directions are provided at each stop; a downtown map with building numbers (pictured above) is available at the info center.
The tour refers to “the crossroads,” the intersection of Robert Parker Coffin Road and Old McHenry Road, which is the historic town center. Robert Parker Coffin served as Long Grove’s mayor from 1958 to 1980, and the street was renamed in his honor on his retirement.
Historical building names are used throughout the tour — for example, the current Village Tavern is referred to by its original name, the Zimmer Tavern. The tour focuses on structures predating 1900. Because Long Grove’s building code requires new construction to follow the “Long Grove Style,” newer buildings appear historically consistent with their older neighbors.
